To enjoy Florida fully you need transportation.  This means either making use of a taxi or a hire car.  Staying at Disney hotels will give you some transportation for free but only really to their attractions.

Hire cars can usually be collected and dropped off at the airport that you fly into and there will be a number of different companies offering this service.  We recommend that you reserve a car before you go.  There are a number of points to bear in mind - some of these relate specifically to visitors from the UK.

There are, of course, various sizes of car to choose from.  Decide what you want by the recommended amount of luggage that the car can take i.e. go for at least one full size suitcase per traveller.  The trunks (boots) of American cars tend to be smaller that comparative vehicles in the UK.

Almost every hire car will be an automatic.  If you drive a manual usually be ready to nail your left foot to the floor.  DO NOT TRY AND USE IT TO DRIVE THE CAR WITH!

When you get in the car for the first time familiarise yourself with the controls, especially lights and the automatic windows.  Have some US currency handy there are likely to be a few tolls (they're not expensive).

Consider nominating more than one driver.  

Familiarise yourself with the main differences on US roads.  In general driving in Florida is much less stressful than in the UK.  There are no roundabouts and mostly driving is on dual carriageway.  In most instances you can turn right on a red light provided nothing is coming.  The traffic lights hang down rather than stand on a pole out of the ground.  Get used to looking the right way, although its dual carriageway you are still driving on the right and you can overtake on any carriageway.
